All,
Following our unsuccessful test this past Saturday, the board and
Colorado Water Well (CWW) have been regrouping. We asked the excavator
to stand down because Saturday gave us sufficient concern to be cautious
about a potentially expensive project that might not locate the leak.
However that's always a risk when trying to locate our pipeline with at
best sketchy data.
During this time we have been digging through records to see if we can
find more detailed information on the original construction of the
pipeline. Board member Abbas Rajabi spent a lot of time with Cherry
Hills Village, and we now have a tranche of documents from their files.
We've gone over a variety of maps and construction documents,
particularly dating from the Denver Water installation, to see what they
indicate. So far we haven't been able to address all of the specific
questions we have regarding the Whitehall Well connection to the main
pipeline.
In parallel with that I have been assembling a meticulous testing plan
with CWW to better establish the source and cause of the leak, and
hopefully determine where the pipe connections are actually made. We
have multiple confirmations that there used to be an above ground ditch
along Whitehall Dr. that became an underground stream in the more recent
past. That adds further confusion to our testing, particularly last
Saturday, which followed a storm on Friday evening that deposited 0.36"
in the neighborhood. The runoff may have caused water to bubble out of
the street at the same location where our 'leak' has been appearing.
Thus we want to ensure we are not misinterpreting the data we've
gathered. CWW has penciled us in for Friday morning. We will initially
close all the valves we know about on the south side, turn on the
Piedmont Well, and slowly work our way north.
With a little luck this should identify the section of pipe that is
causing the leak. It may be exactly where we have believed it to be for
many years. However that was disputed by our Saturday test. Hopefully
we'll have answers tomorrow that will tell us where to dig.
Cheers,
Mark
