Before we had children my wife Debbie and I lived in Waco, Texas for 4 years.
She ran the Nuclear Medicine Program at McClellan Community College. I attended
the Waco Chess Club and lived near Dane ( Gene ) Lacey.

I lost a Waco Championship to a guy who would be at least 90 today, Bill Janes.
Debbie was very disappointed but Bill had played in one of the original US
Closed. He was about 1900 when I lost to him. Waco was a very friendly town,
living there was like paradise for me. No family, no friends, no cousins, no
children, no stress, just one woman to love - I was in my late 20's and was at
my perfect weight. I remember my first week there, three churches called me up
to see which one I would attend. God-fearing people. Everyone knew everyone.
It's nice to get emails from people in my idyllic period.

Dear Gene;

Sorry to hear about the health problems.  A couple of years ago I was diagnosed
with diabetes myself.  But like the old cliche says I am treating it with diet
and exercise.  Initially, I lost 62 pounds but am doing much better.  I have
hit the big six o myself.  I miss the old crowd and the good times.  But the
chess club still has its own ambiance which cannot be matched anywhere.

The chess club is hosting their first tournament in several years on Saturday,
11/22/08 at the Lake Shore Baptist Church at 5801 Bishop Drive which is near
Cobbs Drive and only five minutes from here.  It will be a very low entry fee
if you or anyone you know can come.  It will be a rated tournament.

I continue to be amazed with Brian Wall - especially his ability to get a big
attack rolling in just a few moves.

For the past several years I have been the interim president so the chess club
will at least have some organization and leadership.  Our previous president,
Mario Leal, was very computer savvy and really put us on the map.  Under his
excellent leadership; the chess club attended three state team championships in
San Antonio and once finished in the money.  Those guys were tough!
Unfortunately, Mario had to leave Waco and move to Austin to stay employed
doing what he had been trained to do - there are few good jobs in Wacko.

We are trying to get back to having team championships every year which we have
dubbed "The Janes Cup".  I have won it twice and our mutual friend Jason Howell
has won it three times.

Chess in Waco is still very much alive and as long as I am very much alive it
always will be.  I suspect that our other mutual friend John DeVries will do
the same.

Take care and as Red Skeleton used to say GOD BLESS!
