The Fishing Pole-

1 - is an old idea from different openings

2 - actually started by a Poastal Master who played at least 10 games with it

3- Jack Young either copied the idea from a Correspondence collection or thought
it up himself

4- the he showed it to me and I became obsessed

to repeat, I believe the World's First Fishing Poles were postal games but the
idea of the knight sac is as old as Chess

Quoting Martin Deschner <deschner at yahoo.com>:

    Well Brian,

That's an interesting idea just posted! Play the Fishing Pole
Variation by Postal Chess! When your chess opponent sets up the
position and gets out a chess reference book to look up the opening...
No data! Drawing a research void!

Good idea! That way, you play your opponent by mail, not his chess
 reference library!

    I like it!
