   The King Crab versus Raytheon

Anthea Carson continues to terrorize the Chess World with her solid
 Crab Attack.
Tim Brennan should have been well prepared from his first Crab loss
but he went down ever harder this time.

[Event "Informal match"]
[Site "Lunch"]
[Date "2007.12.05"]
[Round "2"]
[White "Mrs. Martinez"]
[Black "Mr. Brennan"]
[Result "1-0"]
[ICCResult "Black resigns"]

[Opening "Crab opening"]

[TimeControl "Game/30"]

White - Anthea 1693
Black - Tim Brennan 1741

Opening - King Crab - 1 h4 first

Late November 2007

1. h4 e5 2. a4 Be7

The first Crab victory taught Timmy some fear and respect.
He opts for a modest development amid prayers of survival.

3. h5 h6

The King Crab has hit a sea rock and can go no further.
Back to the main plan of d4 and Nf4

4. e3 d5

Normally two pawns abreast are the best pawn formation you can have but
Timmy's center pawns look like schoolboys waiting to be called into the
Principal's office.

5. d4 exd4 6. exd4

f4 beckons the g1-knight like a siren.

6 ... Nf6 7. Na3 O-O 8. Nh3

The charm of the Crab as I interpret it -
Two rook pawns advance, offering mobility
to the rooks, the knight develop dutifully behind them
and before Black can stop laughing,
the Knights centralize, the rabid rooks reposition themselves
and Black is knocked backwards without ever seeing the knockout blow.

8 ... Bg4 9. Be2 Bxe2 10. Qxe2 c5 11. Qb5 b6

I think a Chessmaster would just develop
with 11 ... Nc6 and not worry about pawns.

12. dxc5 Bxc5 13. Be3 Re8 14. O-O-O

By contrast Anthea just develops and ignores the pawns.
Queenside castling with a pawn on a4 may seem strange to you
but I had to do the same thing against Anthea two Tuesdays ago
when I played the Crab against her. Castling is not free in the
Crab Opening - nobody is comfortable, that's the whole point.

14 ... Bxe3+ 15. fxe3 Rxe3 16. Nc4

While Timmy is measuring his pawns with a Raytheon slide rule
Anthea is busy improving the position of her horsies along the wall.

16 ... Re6 17. Nf4

The other horsey braces her hooves along the stable wall
and prances into the center ring, showing off her lacy bridle.

17 ... Re8

The Raytheon missle goes back to the launch pad.

18. Nxd5

Threatening that silly b6-pawn that cost Brennan his Queenside
 developmentas
well as the f6-knight and the e8-rook. Those pincers are too close for
 comfort.
18 ... Nbd7 loses material to 19 N:f6+ -
What's Timmy going to do?

18 ... Nxd5

Removing the obnoxious intruder but ...

19. Rxd5

Suddenly the e8-rook cannot be defended comfortably.
How Anthea routinely manages to move her rook pawns
and still get ahead in development is one mystery
that will stay in her secret chamber forever.

19 ... Qc8

19 ... Qe7 20 Re5
is no help

20. Nd6! Qc6 21. Nxe8 a6 22. Rd8

Anthea finds a pretty mate after 22 Rd8 ab 23 Nf6 checkmate!
Timmy wonders why his left arm is shredded and bleeding.

1-0 Timmy resigns again

To promote my book I like to play Animal Openings. The cutest picture in the
book may be the Lemming jumping off a Chess Cliff with an adorable smile on his
face by Linn Trochim. It's impossible to avoid this opening in your repertoire
once you get a glimpse. My opponent is probably a former Yugoslavian
Chessmaster, Safet Mehinagic, very good in blitz. A few Denver Chessplayers may
speak his language but most don't. If you got to know him I am sure he could
reveal more tragedies than most. We play a lot at the 16th Street mall.
I cannot tell if he understands English well or not. He seems to misunderstand a
lot. My draw offers went unheeded and I couldn't tell if he thought he had
winning chances or didn't understand my offer.

Denver Chess Club

Game/70 minutes

Nov. 20, 2007

Round 3

Board 1

Opening - The Lemming

White - Safet Mehinagic 2094

Black - Brian Wall 2200

Anthea Carson personally knocked me to my rating floor twice this year
and knocked Safet under 2100 the week before in the same building with
the same opening.

1. d4 Na6!!!!!!!!!!!

If 2 e4 then 2 ... c6, 3 ... Nc7
followed by trying to get the knight to d5 with 4 ... d5
or to e6 with ... d6 and ... e5
or harrass an f4 bishop with
... Na6, ... c6, ... Nc7 and ... Ne6 like I did
against David Wallace - Draw.

2. Nf3 c5

If they don't put pressure on the Lemming I
like to fight for the more advanced c5 square.

3. c4

Safet doesn't even bait a trap for the pesky rodent,
just lets him wander all over McGregor's garden.

3 ... cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nf6 5. Nc3 e6 6. a3 d5

I used to play the Tarrasch Defense but it didn't seemed to flower for me.
Just seemed like groveling for a draw most of the time. It's all piece
placements and no pawn breaks to look forward to. About the only tactic
to hope for is Rook to King One, Queen to King Two and Knight captures King's
Bishop Pawn. Maybe I just didn't get the hang of it.

7. cxd5 exd5 8. g3 Be7 9. Bg2 O-O 10. O-O Nc5

The Lemming jumps away from the
cliff onto a fertile wheat field.

11. b4 Nce4 12. Bb2 Nxc3 13. Bxc3 Ne4 14. Bb2 a5 15. b5 a4

Trying to create life, winning chances, imbalances.

16. Qc2 Re8

idea - 17 B:e4 de 18 Q:e4 B:a3

17. Rfd1 Bf6

I like the faith I display in trusting my c8-bishop.
Waiting drives 1 e4 e5 players half mad.

18. e3 Qe7

Hoping for ... N:f2 shots but the
game seemed equal to me all the way.

19. Rac1 Bd7

Only make flipper moves when you are out of ideas.

20. Nf3 Bxb5 21. Rxd5 Bc6

Now all bishops crisscross the center.

22. Rdd1 Bxb2 23. Qxb2 Nc5 24. Qb4 Nb3 25. Qxe7 Rxe7 26. Rc4 f6

Opening a path for my Kng plus denying Mehinagic e5 for his knight.

27. Nd4 Nxd4 28. Rcxd4 Bxg2 29. Kxg2 b5

I offered a draw based on me going after his a3 pawn.

30. Rd8+ Rxd8 31. Rxd8+ Kf7
32. Kf3 Rc7 33. Rb8 Rc3 34. Rxb5 Rxa3 35. Rb7+ Kg6

I offered a draw with a 7 minute time advantage but he
didn't seem to grasp it. Hard to tell with furrenerrs.

36. h4 h5 37. Kf4 Ra1 38. Ra7 a3 39. f3 a2 40. e4 Kh7 41. Ra8 Kg6 42. Ra7 Kh7

1/2-1/2

I held the draw in the post-mortem too
with the help of Dvoretsky's endgame manual
( lent to Aaron and Chris Peterson but checked
out of the Colorado Springs Library )
