[BrianWall-ChessList] Karpov - Fromme

Wednesday Night I found myself in the same boat as Tuesday -
Half a point ahead in the final Money Round at Poor Richard's.
This time there was a twist - Josh drew me and Mike Filppu and
was paired with easy free point Weihmiller. With Josh half a step
behind I had to win to get clear first, I didn't have draw odds
like I did against Chris Peterson the night before.

I arrived two hours early and looked at GM Nigel Davies' 2001 book
on the Alekhine's looking for fresh ideas for Black. I was stunned
when I had to face the Alekhine's against Joe Fromme at 7 PM. Having
poured through every insane variation of the Four Pawns Attack
( I WANT people to play the Four Pawns - I get tired of 2 Nc3 - Joe )
I didn't feel like that was the best line when any result except a
loss was OK. In the Four Pawns anything can happen.

I wanted a more controlled approach - Josh Bloomer was sitting
next to me and he always wins nice games with 4 Nf3

I remember Karpov had no respect for certain openings -
Karpov on Phildor's Defense 1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 d6 -
" White has the center and better development -
What does Black have? "

In the 1973 Leningrad Interzonal Korchnoi approached Karpov and said -

" We are old study buddies, we both have the same score, let us agree
to draw our separate games and tie for first. " - Korchnoi

Karpov -
" No way! I am a maximalist. I play Torre who plays the
Alekhine's Defense and that is a free point! "

Karpov won the game shown below.
I included all of Karpov's games against the Alekhine's Defense.
Karpov lost one to Vaganian and won 10 games, including GM specialists
Bagirov, Mikenas, Gipslis and Alburt, all famous Alekhine's guys.

To make Josh, Nigel Davies and Karpov happy I decided to play
4 Nf3 again and try to remember analysis from 34 years ago
when Bobby Fischer made the Alekhine's hot for a while.

1. e4 Nf6 2. e5 Nd5 3. d4 d6 4. Nf3 Bg4 5. Be2 e6 6. O-O Be7 7. h3

Karpov won with 7 c4 Nb6 8 ed
against GM Vladimir Bagirov
and won with 7 c4 Nb6 8 Nc3 against Csaba Horvath and
and won with 7 c4 Nb6 8 h3 against Franz Zoister

7 ... Bh5 8. c4 Nb6 9. Nc3 O-O

34 years ago I was a materialist atheistic Chessplayer
who might not believe White had enough after
9 ... de 10 N:e5 B:e2 11 Q:e2 Q:d4
but now I wouldn't be afraid to play 12 Rd1!! here,
practically winning. If I hang onto a pawn nowadays,
Nikitovich screams the old Brian is back.

10. Be3 d5

591 games in the database

11. c5

469 games

The alternatives seemed OK too -
11 cd, Nd2, b3, g4

11 ... Bxf3

428 games

Still following Anatoly Karpov - Franz Zoister April 16, 2005
That makes me happy -
I was trying to remember how to play like Karpov.
Karpov wins by constricting, sucking the life out of
your game, minimizing your counterplay.
That is the style I needed for this situation.
GM Dzindi told me Karpov knows instantly where
each piece belongs.

12. gxf3

I remembered GM Shamkovich recommending this idea in
Chess Life right after the first Fischer-Spassky match.
Spassky drew with 12 B:f3 against Fischer,
World Championship Match game 19
I always liked the idea of playing f4 twice.
At least 119 Chessplayers played 12 B:f3 after Boris.
After the match Boris N. Katalymov played 12 gf
against Lev O. Alburt and at least 306 people
followed Boris.

12 ... N6d7

Played 16 times, including Grandmaster Kovacevic

13. b4

Played 4 times

13 ... b6

Played once before

14. f4 f6? TL

Theoretical Lemon by Joe Fromme

I managed to recreate 14 moves of theory 34 years later -
not bad. I forgot more than you will ever know.
The correct 14 ... a5! is the only move ever played here.

15. Bd3?

I looked at 15 f5! winning a knight but I didn't
like the idea of disintegrating the center. My
head hurt from looking at 15 f5 bc 16 dc N:e5
or 15 f5 bc 16 fe cb 17 Nd5 Nb6
or 15 f5 bc 16 bc fe

Human Chessplayers avoid messy lines because
they might miss an intermezzo somewhere.

I decided to play the solid second best move.

15 ... f5! 16. Kh2

Later on I realized I should have consolidated
my Queenside with 16 a3!! first before starting
my Kingside initiative.

16 ... Kh8 17. Rg1

Again I prefer 17 a3!! first

17 ... a5!!

The former marine attacks with full force.

18. a3! axb4! 19. axb4! Rxa1! 20. Qxa1! bxc5!

Joe has equalized but I was afraid of 21 bc N:c5 22 dc d4 =

21. dxc5??

So much for maintaining control.
21 ... d4!! 22 B:d4 N:c5!!
and my King and g1-rook are flatfooted,
feeling useless while my center implodes.

21 ... Nc6??

Returning the favor of the 15th move,
Joe's turn to make a second best move.

22. Qa4??

These positions are tough to decode -
I missed a chance to play 22 Bb5!! N:b4 23 Qa4!
winning a piece so 22 Bb5!! Ndb8 23 Qa4! consolidates or
22 Bb5 Ncb8 23 Qa4!!, Ne2 or Qa8
with a clear edge.
22 Bb5!! d4 23 B:c6!! with Rd1 coming
is also much better for me.
So far I have missed 15 f5!!
and 22 Bb5!! and Joe has missed 21 ... d4!!

22 ... d4??

I thought 22 Qa4 would give me an advantage in all lines but
22 ... Qa8!! is pretty equal

23. Qxc6!!

Only move

23 ... dxe3!!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

With 45 minutes left I spent 28 on my next move.
With 38 minutes left Joe spent 21 minutes on his next move.
Then we both had 17 left to end the game.
I hated Joe's Queen crashing into my position after
... N:e5 or ... N:c5

Let's look at some options -

24 Bb1 getting out of the way
24 ... N:c5, ... ef or ... N:e5
all OK for Joe

24 fe getting rid of the alien
24 ... N:e5! 25 fe Q:d3 26 Q:e6 B:c5 or 26 Q:c7 Q:c3
Joe is OK

24 Q:e6 removing a key pawn
24 ... B:c5!!
Joe is OK

24 Qg2 threatening mate in one and gurading my King
24 ... g5! threatening 25 ... N:e5, ... N:c5 or ... Qb8
Joe is OK

24 Bf1 preventing ... f1(Q)
24 ... ef and 25 ... Nb8
Joe is OK

24 Bc4 attacking e6
24 ... N:e5 25 fe Qd4
I hated this line with Joe invading and attacking everything -
Joe's Queen reminds me of a Ninja, a one man army.
Joe's Queen on d4 looks like a exploding sun going supernova.
26 Q:e6 Q:f4+ 27 Kg2 Q:f2+ 28 Kh1 Qf3+ 29 Rg2 Q:h3+ or ... Bh4
Joe is OK

24 Bb5!! should give me some advantage wherever Joe moves his knight -
24 ... N:c5 25 Rd1!!, bc!, Qg2!, fe
24 ... N:e5 25 fe!
24 ... Nb8 25 Qg2! or Q:e6

24 Rd1!!! is the best move and the one I wanted to play for a long time -
I got this crazy idea in my head that I was " abandoning my King prematurely " -
24 ... N:e5 25 fe Qd4 26 Ne2 Q:b4 27 fe, Q:c7, Q:e6, f4 plus others win
24 ... Qa8 25 Q:d7!! or Q:a8! should win
24 ... B:c5 25 bc Qh4 26 fe, Qf3 or Ne2 win

I finally ended up making the third best
move trying to keep Joe's Queen contained.
My move gives up half a pawn advantage.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

24. Be2 Nxe5

24 ... Nb8 25 Qg2! or Q:e6
24 ... ef 25 Rd1 Nb8 26 Q:e6 Qe8 27 Nd5 Bd8 28 Qc8 or Q:e8
is similar to the game
24 ... N:c5 25 fe or bc Qd2 is better for me

Joe Fromme -
The Old Joe would play the passive 24 ... Nb8
but the New Joe wants to go down fighting.

25. Qxe6

Played quickly
25 fe Qd2 26 Q:c7 ef 27 Rf1 Qf4+= equal
-------------------------------------------------------------------
25 fe Qd2 26 f4 Bd8 27 Q:e6 Q:c3 28 Qd7 g5 29 e6 Qg7
I suppose I am better here
-------------------------------------------------------------------
25 fe Qd2 26 Rg2 Bd8!!, ... ef or ... Q:c3 Joe is fine
------------------------------------------------------------------
My idea was different - by threatening 26 Q:e5-g7 checkmate
I keep Joe's old lady at home.

25 ... exf2

I was OK with 25 ... Ng6 26 Q:e3 -
remember - win fine, draw OK, loss disaster

26. Rd1! f1=Q!!

Huh? I expected 26 ... Nf3+ 27 B:f3 Q:d1 28 N:d1 f1(Q)
29 Q:e7 Rg8 30 Qe2 Q:e2 31 B:e2 with a winning ending.
I barely managaed to keep his Queen away
from my King so Joe creates a new one.

Time -
11 minutes for me
8 for Java

27. Bxf1!

27 R:f1 Ng6 doesn't give me anything

27 ... Nf3+!

All that thinking and I still have no clue.

28. Kh1! Qe8

I think I still win after 28 ... Nd4 29 R:d4! Q:d4 30 Q:e7
With 7 minutes left each the play gets very spotty now.

29. Nd5

29 Nb5 or Rd7 are better

29 ... Bd8! 30. Qxe8! Rxe8! 31. Rd3

31 b5 is better.
31 Rd3 is an old trick of mine to
keep the position simple and
manageable in time pressure.

31 ... Ne1 32. Re3! Rxe3! 33. Nxe3! Nf3 34. Nxf5! Bf6
35. Kg2 Nd4 36. Ng3 Nc2 37. b5! Bd4 38. Ne4

38 b6!! cb 39 c6! Ne3+ 40 Kf3 Nd5 41 Ke4! wins a piece

38 ... Ne3+! 39. Kf2

39 Kf3 N:f1? 40 b6! wins again -
we missed everything -
I had 3 minutes,
Joe had one

39 ... Ng4+ 40. Kf3! Nf6?? 41. c6??

I think 41 N:f6!! wins because of 41 ... gf 42 b6!!
or 41 ... B:f6 42 Ke4! invading the Queenside

41 ... Nd5??

Now 41 ... N:e4= 42 K:e4 Bb6-a5-b6-a5-b6
is an automatic draw. I even have the wrong
colored rook pawn for good measure. But Joe
was too worried about keeping score and making
moves to evaluate any possible endings.

42. Ng5! Nf6! 43. Bc4!

Keeping Joe's King locked in

43 ... g6 44. Ne6

Eventually Joe traded his knight, not for my knight,
but for my bishop. This allowed me to win with Nd5.
Joe was checkmated with one second on his clock
20 moves later.

Missed opportunities -
Brian

15 f5!
16 a3!
17 a3!
22 Bb5!
24 Rd1!
29 Nb5!
31 b5!
38 b6!
39 Kf3!
41 N:f6!

Missed opportunities -
Joe

14 ... a5!
21 ... d4!
22 ... Qa8!=
41 ... N:e4!=

Pretty sick but I think I understand this line a lot better now.
