[BrianWall-ChessList] Bloomer-Wall 8-22-07 Center Counter, Scandinavian Defense

I lost almost no games with the Caro-Kann Defense 30 years ago and nowadays I
lose very few with the similar Scandinavian. Looking at recent emails, I drew
twice with Renard Anderson, one of the finest players in Colorado. I also beat
Renae Delaware in a blindfold game, beat Robert Ramirez 3 times, beat Leonardo
Sotaridona, Kevin Muchlicki and Bill Weihmiller.
On the White side of the Scandinavian I beat Guy Wheatley, Steve Towbin,
Tom Swift and Terry Powell.

I had a win, a loss and a draw on the Black side of the Scandinavian
with Ted Doykos, all in the same game at the 2007 Pikes Peak Open. I also
has a 3 result game with New England legend John Curdo. In the Curdo
game my flag fell whereupon I noticed a gap in Curdo's analog clock
whereupon Curdo resigned whereupon I offered a draw. In the Doykos
game, my flag fell on the 39th move, I shook his hand in resignation,
then noticed Ted hadn't marked down the last 8 black moves. I told
Ted he didn't have a complete scoresheet and couldn't claim a time win.
Since he was a piece down he offered a draw. Buck ruled a handshake
is not a resignation without some other action like tipping over your King,
saying " I resign", marking your scoresheet, etc. The reason is that sometimes
language barriers lead to confused results where one person thinks he is
offering a draw and the other player thinks he is resigning. TD Buck Buchanan
forced Ted to make his next move, whereupon I offered a draw a piece up. In my
heart I had already resigned when I shook hands, although I didn't say so at
the time. I did intend to check his scoresheet and how many moves I made
before I fully resigned.

Ted on the draw offer -
I guess I owe you one.

Brian to Ken and Ted Doykos -
When you do the right thing, it's over with.
When you do the wrong thing,
it haunts you for life.

For some reason I was thinking how nice Mamma Doykos is.

I have studied the Scandinavian with
Danielle Rice, Duwayne Langseth and Tom Bourie
to try and make it a workable system.

The two best opening specialists in Colorado are
Renard Anderson and Josh "Mini-Elvis" Bloomer.
Josh lost his Master rating this year due to draws with Mike Filpuu, Anthea
Carson and Imre Barlay plus a botched brilliancy against Buck Buchanan last
week that could have been one of his best games. Josh would have been 2400 at
age 17 if we had any decent players in this state. Josh has Grandmaster level
opening preparation, 500 Chess books, good speed skills, good positional sense,
thorough tactical skills, perfect move technique, courage, imagination and an
eery sense of calm like Abby Marshall. Josh can also play poker well, tell you
what color underwear you have on without peeking first, guess how many jelly
beans are in a jar, sing well ( Josh just tried out for American Idol ) and fit
in with almost any crowd.

I play the Scandinavian when I am feeling lazy and nontactical and I don't mind
a draw.

Josh and I went with another singer, Ashley to the Bar "Finish Line" after the
game and I heard Josh sing "Dream Lover". Ashley is a sweet 22 yr old who had a
knee brace and gave me a demo tape of her songs. Anthea Carson once told me
Josh Bloomer had a sexy voice. Josh asked his female roommate Jennifer if that
was true.

Jennifer -
Yes

Josh in mock outrage -
What!? I've had this secret weapon the whole time and no one told me!!

When Josh sings it doesn't sound like him,
he sings with such feeling he can
make me cry with the right song.

Bloomer's only weakness is that he is such a great Chessplayer
he sometimes runs out of time instead of imagination. Josh works
out at the National Sports Center "Pudgy's Olympic Training Camp"

Round 3

Game/90
5 second delay

White -
Josh Bloomer
from Teaser Stud to Mini-Elvis
2182

Black -
Brian Wall
Boundary Violator
( - 60 pounds since December )
2225

1. e4 d5

I wanted to try the Alekine's Defense as the Ultimate Challenge
against Bloomer's preparation but I stuck with a solid standby.
The Scandinavian was scary enough because Josh had already
played two perfect games against Arthur Glassman on the White side.

2. exd5 Qxd5 3. Nc3 Qd6 4. d4 Nf6 5. Nf3 a6

Tom Bourie has complete confidence in this system due to some
blitz games and an IM Andrew Martin video. It ain't so easy
in practice. Tom gave me a beatiful cigar box with wooden
pieces in it to compliment my beautiful new oak wooden
Chess board I bought for $25, despite local howls of protest.

6. g3

383 games

232 6 ... Bg4
 93 6 ... b5
 19 6 ... Nc6
 14 6 ... e6
 13 6 ... Bf5
 11 6 ... g6
  1 6 ... Be6

I had barely survived 10 days ago at the Pikes Peak Open against
Renard Anderson with 6 ... b5. Hiarcs preferred 6 ... Bg4 or ... Bf5
so I decided to try that next time.

Hiarcs -
6 ... Bf5
6 ... Qb6 ( untried )
6 ... e6
6 ... Bg4
6 ... Bd7 ( untried )
6 ... Be6

6 ... h6 ( untried )
6 ... Nbd7 ( untried )
6 ... Nc6
6 ... Nd5 ( untried )
6 ... Qb4 ( untried )

Hiarcs changes its mind a lot.

Humans think in concepts. Where do I want my c8-bishop?
b7 is the best place but maybe too loosening.
I hadn't really recovered from my Renard debacle.
I was still traumatized.

7 ... Nd5 8 N:d5
7 ... c6
7 ... g6

7 ... e6

20 games -
I got in big trouble against Renard by not playing
... e6, ... Be7 and ... 0-0 fast enough - my King
got caught in the center 10 days ago.

12 8 0-0
 6 8 h3
 2 8 Bf4

Hiarcs

In the Andrew Martin video he lost badly in one game
with ... B:f3 instead of ... Bh5 ( not this position )

8 ... Bh5

2 games

9. g4! Bg6! 10. Ne5!

Played twice.

10 ... Nc6 TL

I spent 10 minutes on this Theoretical Lemon

I couldn't find a decent move here.
What's worse is my play was based on missing
10 ... Nc6 11 Bf4 Q:d4?? 12 B:c6+
( Don't laugh - 11 ... Q:d4?? is not too bad against other moves )
This was unforgiveable - Kramnik called
a similar slip "a wakeup call" -
I tried my best the rest of the game.
I think my opening mistake was not trying
7 Bg2 Nc6 8 Bf4 Qb4
which is scary looking without preparation.

Hiarcs -
10 ... Qb6 Played once
10 ... c6 played once
10 ... Nc6
10 ... Be7
10 ... Nd5
10 ... c5
10 ... Nbd7
10 ... Ra7
10 ... Qb4
all much better for White.

GM Maxim Dlugy-
You have an interesting style, Josh.
You always find the critical opening move.

11. Bf4!! Nxe5!

Like my Renard game the only thing I have in this position is -
1 - I don't want to taint my new wooden board
2 - I don't like losing.
3 - I don't like losing to Josh.
4 - I don't like losing with the Scandinavian. I have to believe in something.

I spent 21 minutes making sure various desperate tactics didn't work.
14 ... Qb4 15 N:c6!! Q:b2 16 Qb1!! Ba3!! 17 Nd1!!
14 ... Nd5 15 N:f7!! Q:f4 16 N:h8!
14 ... B:c2 15 Q:c2!

If any of these sleazy tries had given me any hope of an initiative I would
have tried them.

12. dxe5!! Qxd1+!

I spent 11 minutes smiling at
12 de! Qb4!? 13 ef! Q:f4 14 B:b7! Rd8?? 15 Bc6+ Rd7 16 Q:d7
checkmate
or
12 de! Qb4!? 13 ef! Q:f4 14 B:b7! Bc5 15 Qe2!
or wondering if I had any play after
12 de! Qb4!? 13 ef! Q:b2 14 Bd2 gf
or
12 de! Qb4!? 13 ef Rd8 14 Qf3, Qc2 or Bd2

With a heavy heart I accepted my fate in a lost ending,
having investigated every other possibility.
The one thing that gave me hope was that a month ago
I almost did an email on 4 or 5 games I didn't win where
I was a clear pawn up, like against Richard Herbst and
Safet Mahinagic in the 2007 Denver Open.
I decided it was my turn to hold the game a pawn down
or at least give maximum resistance. After my hideous
miscalculation on move 10 I go back to playing like a computer.
Another thing that gave me endurance was the observation -

I bet Kasparov has had worse positions and he didn't give up.
He fought like a tiger.

13. Rxd1!! Nd5! 14. Nxd5!

I expect perfect opening play from Josh and I am getting it.
Josh didn't think 14 B:d5 ed 15 N:d5 0-0-0 16 e6 R:d5
17 R:d5 Be4 18 Rd7 B:h1 19 R:c7+ Kd8 20 R:f7
was strong enough

14 ... exd5 15. Bxd5!!

Josh had powerful options in
15 c4! and 15 R:d5!

15 ... O-O-O!

9 minutes.

I am willing to go down a pawn in the Vigorito Ending
( formerly called the Browne ending until Dave beat Walter
in a rook plus opposite colored bishop ending )
after 16 B:b7+ K:b7 17 R:d8 Bb4+

Josh avoids opposite colored bishops.
16 Ke2 or 16 Bb3 are good too.

16. O-O Be7

17 B:b7+ was a real threat now.

17. c3 h5

Josh said I had a 20 move initiative for my pawn.
I thought the g4-pawn might give me some play.
Basic drawing strategy -
trade pawns, sac bishop for last white pawn,
draw with one bishop versus two bishops ending.

18. Bf3 Bd3!

Josh kept missing e6! so I play to block it.

19. Rfe1! Bc4 20. b3! Be6

Blocking the e6 pawn break

21. Kg2 hxg4!

Josh has 6 pawns left.

22. hxg4! a5

To trade more pawns.

Annoying -
Josh Bloomer

First Brian had his pawns in straight rows but then he changed his formation -
Ashley

23. Rxd8+ Rxd8! 24. Rd1! a4

The problem with 24 ... Rh8 hiding
is I didn't like Bd5 ideas.

25. Rxd8+! Kxd8 26. bxa4

It seemed a bit odd to isolate his Queenside pawns.

26 ... c6

Since the a2-pawn cannot be saved.

27. Be3 Bxa2

Josh has 5 pawns left. I decided to keep my Kingside
pawns back and not mess with ... g5. Let Josh slowly
move his bishops out of the way, slowly advance his
King and Kingside pawns to create a passed pawn. I
wanted Josh to do the maximum amount of work to win,
create a study if he has to.

I have 10 minutes left to Bloomer's 35.
Maximum intensity level.
Desperately trying to understand the position.

28. Be4!

Nice centralizing move activating the pawn wave.

28 ... Bc4

Keeping an eye on a6

29. f4 g6

To trade another pawn on f5 gf

30. Bb6+ Ke8

I found this decision hard.
5 minutes for me,
22 for Josh.

31. Kf3 Bh4

I didn't know if the pawn trade idea
32 ... Be1 33 Bd4 c5 34 B:c5 B:c3
was helpful or harmful. I decided to
avoid it all game.

32. Ke3 Be1 33. Bd4 Kd7

3 minutes for me,
16 for Josh.

34. Bd3

Josh and I both felt bishop trades helped him.

34 ... Bb3! 35. a5! Bd1

The position of my bishops together was the key computer
breakthrough in the 2 bishops versus knight ending.

36. g5

seems odd because now bishop
trades on e6 and f5 might draw.
36 f5 seems more natural to me.

36 ... Bg4!

1/2-1/2 after 30 more unrecorded moves.
I basically hung tough.
Josh declined a bishop trade on f5.
Josh played a6 ba at some point,
then he didn't have many pawn tries left.
I asked TDs Dean Brown and Jerry Meier
to keep track of the 50 move rule.
We got down to a minute each.
Josh has declined so many draws
over the years I refused to beg.
Josh finally offered a draw because
he hadn't made any progress for a long time
and didn't want to blunder in a silly time scramble.

A tough struggle, the kind you don't want the kids to know about -
it might discourage them. It was an honorable battle.
