8.Bf4! is a very good move with a good plan- hitting d6 and d5. The shrub of
analysis sent by Brian was not a full tree but was still full of treats! For
starters, the obvious 8...e5 is hazardous- for Black!! 8...e5 9.Nxe5!! de
10.Qxd8+ Kxd8 11.Bxe5 has Blacks King virtually undefended Black escapes
imediate defeat on 11...Be6 12.0-0-0+ Kc8 13.Nd5 by trying to bribe WHite with
13...Rb8 (not wanting the mobile central roller on 13...Bxd5 14.ed) when Black
has stopped mate on b6 and if 14.Bxb8 Kxb8 the King survives, with 2 pieces vs
R Black will have chances to save the endgame.
DOH- White doesnt want just an Exchange! Not 14Bxb8, instead 14.c7 Rb7
15.Nb6+!! Rxb6 16.Rd8+ Kb7 17.Rb8+ Ka7 18.Rxf8 f6 19.Bg3 Rc6 20.Rd1, Black is
so busted!
Sometimes ...Ra7 does well for Black in the Sicilian, but this doesnt
seem to be one of those nights- 8.Bf4! Ra7 9.Nd2 d5 10.Qe2 Ne7 11.Rd1 d4
12.Nxc4 Nxc6 13.0-0 Be7 14.Bg3 0-0 15.f4 Black is not crushed, but has
minimal counterplay Thus White has all day to shift his pieces Kside, Rd1-d3,
e4-e5 and Nc3-e4, eventually Black suffers on the h-file and then has to deal
with g2-g4-g5
Thus Black may well be advised to play against 8.Bf4! as if its a French
Defense for Black, even if WHites pieces are not in usual French mode....
noticing that the Sicilianish 8...Qc7 9.Nd2 e5 10.Bg3 Wxc6 11.Nxc4 Be6 12.Nd5
Bxd5 13.ed Qb7 (13...Qb5 14.Qe2 Be7 15.f4 f6 16.00 is no bargain for Black)
14.f4 f6 15.00 Nh6 16.Qf3 Be7 17.Rad1 00 18.f5 Black survives, but still
little counterplay thus WHite has time for Rf1-e1-e4-h4 and more mayhem with
ensuing g2-g4-g5 Black takes that French option after all- 8.Bf4! Be7
9.Nd2 d5 10.0-0 Bd6 11Qg4 Kf8!? It isnt safe, but Black hasnt any real safe
options anyway- at least for one move Rad1 is off the menu, and getting off the
efile is not so bad for Black.... at least here he can find time for clipping
c6 while keeping relatively safe- Whites attack is real but not full-throttle
checkmate. Typically what happens is the better player prevails- White either
creates enough pressure to finally brakthrough or Black has
the hatches battened down enough to materialistically thrive in the endgame.
It can be well understood that not everyone wants to defend such a
position for Black, even with the prospect of winning a measly Pawn. For those
so uninclined, lets go back to move 6, there was a key decision there- 1.e4 c5
2.Bc4 Nc6 3.Nf3 e6 4.Nc3 a6 5.d4 b5 6.d5 (We again skip the business that
5...cd is perfectly playable, let White work that out...) and now we have
6...bc which is not forced. d4-d5 doesnt kill White in the Ruy Lopez, doesnt
win by force for WHite against the Gruenfeld or Kings Indian, even though the
Moeller Variation of the Italian Game is favorable for White, even there Black
is alive. Why should this position be any different? 6...Na5 might be ugly,
but it does gain valuable Qside space for Black, Whites pieces arent yet
aligned for the decisive Kside attack- we can be sure Bc4 is moving omewhere,
d3 looks to be most offensive In any event, whether ...Na5 or ...Nb8, Black
gains space without getting waxed, his position remains
 playable
For our fans of the Bowlder Attack, feel free to learn the Keres Attack
against the Sicilian! All out brawl, not likely to land in a positional
struggle!
