[BrianWall-ChessList] Take the pebble from my hand, grasshopper

Bill Weihmiller played this old line against me in the French Defense 10 weeks
ago and almost killed me. I published my annotations in the latest Colorado
Informant. Since then I have played and studied the system 5 times as White.
Tonight I had a chance to show Bill what I learned as we switch colors from our
last encounter, same location, 5/30/2007

Poor Richard's Restaurant Chess Tourney, August.

Colorado Springs, CO

August 15, 2007

Game/75

White - Brian Wall 2232

Black - Bill Weihmiller 1757

6th game with this line of the French
since 5/30/2007

1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. Nd2 Nf6 4. e5 Nfd7 5. f4 c5 6. c3 Nc6 7. Ngf3 f6

Josh Devine, Colorado Springs teenager and Aaron, a kid from the Hummingbird
Chess Camp amd I all tried ... Qb6, ... cd and ... Bb4+ to induce Kf2.
Josh and I followed up by ... f6, ... 0-0 and ... g5

8. Bd3

What I like about this line is that White's bishops automatically go to
d3 and e3 at the first opportunity. The only problem is that now Nb3 c4
forks my minor piecs so how do I develop the Queenside?

8 ... Be7 9. O-O

9 h4!? was tempting with the vicious Greek sacrifice Fishing Pole trap
9 h4!? 0-0?? 10 B:h7+!! K:h7 11 Ng5+!! fg
12 Qh5+ Kg8 13 hg Rf5 14 g4!! winning
but I have learned to be patient in this variation.

Great blitz weapon though! -
Josh Bloomer

After 4 games with an awkward, interfering White King on f2,
I was happy to castle. Next time watch out for
9 Qe2!
or
9 ef! N:f6 10 dc! B:c5 11 Qc2!

9 ... Qb6!!! TN
Theoretical Novelty by Bill Weihmiller

Amazing - our first game as White Bill innovated correctly with 14 g3!!!
now he finds the right move as Black too! Both are natural French moves.

10. Kh1

I examined the weird 10 c4! cd 11 cd ed 12 Nb3
but I decided to go with a Milner-Barry type sac instead.

10 ... O-O!

10 ... cd 11 N:d4 N:d4 12 cd Q:d4
13 Nb3!! ( or 13 Nc4!) Qb6 14 Qh5+! Kd8
gives me more than enough for a pawn.

11. Qc2

11 ef! is better but I try to stay in the formations I am studying -
an inflexible, practical attitude.

11 ... f5!

Forced.
11 ... g6 12 B:g6!
or
I have many powerful moves after 11 ... h6 like
12 dc!!, Bh7+!, ef!, Nh4! and Nb3!

12. g4!! cxd4

I have overestimated my position and given my opponent
w inning ppdition 5 times in a row in this opening
and I would have done it again after
12 ... c4 13 N:c4!? dc 14 B:c4
or
12 ... c4 13 B:f5? ef 14 gf with many Weihmiller wins
like 14 ... Nd:e5!! as I pointed out after the game.
I doubt I would have played the correct
12 ... c4 13 Be2! Qd8 14 gf!

13. gxf5! Nc5??

2 minutes spent on this move.

90% of tactical problems involve removing
the obstacles between the White Queen
and the Black King.
13 ... ef!! 14 B:f5?? R:f5!! 15 Q:f5 Nd:e5!!
boomerangs for me.
13 ... ef!! 14 N:d4! N:d4! 15 cd! is correct.

14. f6!!

Forced

White Queen -
Get out of my way!

14 ... gxf6??

6 minutes spent.

The best move loses a piece -
14 ... N:d3! 15 fe!! N:e7 16 Q:d3!

15. Bxh7+!!

mating the man who taught me the line.

White Queen -
Get out of my way!

15 ... Kh8! 16. Qg6!!

White Queen -
I'll take it from here.

I went out in the rain and had a pleasant chat
with Ashley the Chessgirl/forklift operator/student/singer
and waited for Bill to resign.

16 ... Bd7

16 ... Qc7 or ... Bd6
last the longest.

17. Bg8!!

Very elegant -
17 ... R:g8 18 Qh6 checkmate
or
17 ... Rf7 18 B:f7 Bf8 ( to stop 19 Qh6 checkmate ) 19 Qg8 checkmate
or
17 ... N:e5 18 Qh7 checkmate
By comparison I consider the other mating lines with
17 Rg1 or Qh6 crude and unusual punishment.

1-0 Weihmiller resigns despite being able to make two more legal moves.
I spent 15 minutes in the rain.

I came down with Tom Bourie who made Mike Filppu resign one move earlier.

3rd game with this line

I won a pawn from Eurotrash with thematic play but botched the ending
so
bad
Safet could have won with 53 ... Re2 54 Kb3 Re3+ 55 Kc2 R:f3
I claimed a draw in a lost position just like my Devine game.
TD Joe Haines thought it was cruel to claim the draw then show the
win.
In his Serbian accent, Mehinagic said at first when I claimed the
draw,
" Play!, Play!"
After Joe confirmed the repetition, Safet said,
" OK, draw, but I played terrible. "
I suspect that all immigrants speak perfect English when they want to.
