Gordon Randall is a handsome young soldier at the Air Force Academy in Colorado
Springs, CO. He plays very confidently. I thought during the game
maybe he was some New York Chess hustler like I used to contest with at
Washington Square Park.

Round 3
Board 3
English Opening
beautiful weather
I had bought my new wooden Chessboard already but I was
having trouble assembling a full set of wooden pieces.
1. Nf3 g6 2. g3 Bg7 3. Bg2 c5 4. d3 Nc6 5. O-O e5
6. e4 d6 7. Be3 Nf6 8. h3 b6 TN
Theoretical Novelty 675,998,233 by Wall
8 ... 0-0 has been played twice.
9. c4
I used this strategy against IM Joe Fang one time -
the idea is to frustrate the higher rated player
by parking both knights on Queen five with central equality.
I ended up winning the game by trapping Joe's Queen in time presure.
9 ... Nd4 10. Nc3 O-O 11. Ne1 Rb8 12. Rb1 Nh5 13. Nd5 f5 14. Qd2 f4
The idea is a knight fork on e2 if Gordon takes 4 times on f4.
15. Bxd4 exd4 16. g4 Nf6 17. Nf3 1/2?
I thought it was a strange moment for a draw offer when
17 N:f6+ left me little to pray for.
17 ... Nd7 18. Nxf4 1/2?
Another draw offer -
he might have felt I didn't hear him the first time since I didn't answer.
I always think of Hamblin's response to draw offers -
Opponent -
Draw?
Jim, with a slightly puzzled look -
Are there only Kings left?
I don't give draws just because someone has
failed to drop a piece in the opening yet.
Play over Fischer's games to see how long
and hard he fought to avoid any draw to prove
he was the best.
I kept thinking of Kramnik who claimed he beat Toplaov
by creating something out of nothing in the ending.
17 ... Bh6 19. Ne6 Bxd2 20. Nxd8 Rxd8 21. Nxd2
Everyone I play is a &%$#ing lumberjack, chop, chop, chop!
Chessmaster Josh Bloomer
followed by a rousing techno karaoke impression.
21 ... Ne5
Now I get a protected passed pawn that eventually kills him.
22. f4 Nxd3 23. Rf3 Nb4 24. a3 Nc6 25. b4 Bd7 26. Bf1 Rf8
I am trying to loosen up the f4-pawn so I can play ... Ne5,
supporting my protected passed pawn.
27. Bd3 h6 28. b5 1/2?
Third draw offer - Gordon has drawn Masters twice before - I am not surprised
-he plays solid Chess, beating super solid 1800 Duwayne Langseth.
28 ... Nd8
Headed for e6-f4
Kramnik
29. f5 Nf7
finally reaching ... e5 -
Kramnik
30. h4 h5
I like this move, ruining Randall's pawn structure-
Kramnik
31. gxh5 gxf5 32. exf5 Ne5
Acheiving Nirvana, Kramnik style
33. Rg3+ Kh7 34. Ne4 Bxf5
Gordon Randall did not seem happy anymore as his
equal position is somehow mysteriously disintegrating -
Kramnik
35. Re1 Nxd3 36. Rxd3 Rbe8 37. Ng5+ Kh6 38. Rxe8 Rxe8 39. Rf3 Bg4
Looking forard to some ... Be2:c4:b5 action
40. Rf7
Sweet - seting up a vicious mate in one
on the final move of the time control.
40 ... Kxh5 41. Rh7+ Kg6
0-1 Gordon resigns
because his pieces are all cut off from my protected passed d-pawn victory
march. Kramnik.
