Andy Rea is a difficult opponent for me - we have cost each other the Colorado
Closed title in the last round, we shared a Denver Open, Andy once refused
Philipp Ponomarev a draw when Andy was down an exchange for nothing, eventually
winning the game and costing Philipp an early title.
Andy is an ex-master, a former state champion of both Colorado and Pennsylvania.
I believe Andy has played twice as many rated games as Botvinnik.
Andy likes flourescent socks - she showed me his New Age Lime Green socks before
the game - he also wears bright orange.
At first I had a horrible score against Andy - I could not adjust to his style.
I have trouble with Chess sceptics like Curt Carlsen. They don't fall for my
nonsense. I finally started making observations about Andy's strengths -
I don't know any weaknesses.
1 - Andy is a Colle specialist like Anthea Carson.
2 - Andy once beat me with the small advantage of bishop over knight ending.
3 - Andy is awesome at winning or drawing when his opponent has a Queen and Andy
has some weird compensation, like rook and bishop or two knights or rook and
pawn.
4 - Andy does not believe in gambits. Andy can play many orthodox openings.
5 - Andys seems to have access to Chess literature the rest of us don't.
6 - Andy is 2800 at postmortems.
7 - Andy's Chess credo is - " Call the obvious bluff! " meaning don't believe
your opponent's moves - I have the most trouble with guys like this. Most
Chessplayers are too lazy to refute anybody.
8 - Andy reads my emails and pays attention and often comments.
9 - Andy is a man of principle who is often given leadership positions in
Colorado Chess.
10 - Andy is usually ahead on the clock.
11 - Andy is very sexy if you're a bunny.

I noticed soemthing funny lately - people will play a bad opening if you give it
a cute name. This is my third Bowlder Attack, an opening I would despise without
a name. I have three victories from three lousy positions.
2 ... Nc6 3. Nf3 e6 4. Nc3 a6 5. a4 Nf6
I am not going to hide behind a computer this game but as far as I can tell this
completely refutes the Bowlder Attack. Amazingly there are 180 games with this
absurd position. 6 e5 sucks because of 6 ... d5 Andy ( played once ) or
6 ... Ng4 Wall. ( played 10 times )
6. O-O ( 38 times ) d5 ( 21 times ) 7. exd5 exd5
8. Re1+ ( 12 times ) Be7 9. Bf1 ( 7 times ) Bg4 ( 5 times )
10. h3 ( 4 times ) Bh5 ( 4 times ) 11. d3 TN
Theoretical Novelty 122,658 by Wall
11 g4 was played three times,
a move I was afraid to play while Andy
could still castle Queenside and play ... h5
11 ... Qd7 12. Bf4 O-O
I looked at my position in total disgust,
wanting to play 13 Qd2 B:f3 14 gf
but knowing how bad it must be.
I finally swallowed my pride.
I can't stand all these pointless
KB moves.
13. Be2 Bxf3
Just when my self dusgust was at its apex,
Andy goes into trade-trade-lose mode.
Everyone I play is a &%$#ing lumberjack, chop, chop, chop!
Chessmaster Josh Bloomer
followed by a rousing techno karaoke impression.
14. Bxf3 Nd4 15. Bxd5 Nxd5 16. Nxd5 Qxd5 17. Rxe7
Is my pawn worth Andy's development?
I am not sure and I doubt I played the best.
17 ... Rae8 18. Rxe8
maybe 18 Re3
18 ... Rxe8 19. Be3 Nf5 20. Qd2 Nxe3
20 ... Nh4 21 f3 N:f3+ is wild
21. fxe3 Qe5 22. d4 Qd5
Andy and I thought during the game that 22 ... Q:e3+ lost
but it doesn't seem that way now -
maybe he failed to call my obvious bluff here.
23. a5 Re6 24. c4
Matsers don't just roll their pawns forward,
we look for vicious shots along the way.
My idea is 24 ... Q:c4 25 Rc1:c5
24 ... Qd7 25. Ra3 f5 26. b4 cxb4 27. Rb3 f4
I thought for 24 minutes analyzing Queen endings but they didn't seem to get
anywhere, e.g., 28 c5 fe 29 R:e3 R:e3 30 Q:e3 Qb5
and his Queen does everything from one location,
a full service stop.
28. exf4 Re4 29. Rd3 b3 30. Qc3 Rxf4 31. c5
Down to 4 minutes for me versus 27 for Andy -
I also thought 31 d5 b2 32 Q:b2 R:c4 33 d6
followed by Qe5 and h3-h4-h5-h6 or Qe7 should win.
The d6-pawn dominates space.
31 ... Kh8 32. Qxb3 Rxd4 33. c6!!
A vicious uppercut that kicks Andy's ass back to Ohio and then Kuwait.
The idea is 33 ... bc 34 Qb8+ mates or
33 ... Q:c6 34 R:d4
or 33 ... Qd8 34 cb R:d3 35 Q:d3
one minute 26 seconds on my clock
21 minutes for Andy
33 ... Rxd3 34. cxd7 Rxd7 35. Qe6 Rd1+ 36. Kh2 h6 37. Qc8+ Kh7 38. Qc2+
1-0 Andy Rea resigns
Andy was a good sport after the game and wished me well.
He also praised my endgame play in Round 5 against Renard Anderson.
That felt especially nice becuse he once published an appraisal
of my play where he called my endgame play pedestrian.
