[BrianWall-ChessList] Nunn-Smeets 2006 Rising Stars Amsterdam, Holland Brilliancy with a glitch

Brian Wall brianwallchess3 at taom.com

No matter how many times I play over the games of the
2006 Rising Star tournament, I just confirm to myself
that this game will have no equal.

Nunn, 51 is month older than me -
Brian - 3-26-1955
Nunn - 4-25-1955

Jan Smeets, 21 -
April 5, 1985

IM Bill Paschall pronounces Jan's name as
Smeets-
Smates-
Smades-
Sweetwagon-
Smellwagen-
Smellwagen
Stellvagen.

I think Smates comes closest to the Dutch.

Nunn was exuberant at the press conference,
all smiles and Smates was almost silent,
tall, blonde, a bit awkward.
If it was Denver, you would swear it was
Brian and Chris Peterson doing the postmortem.

My final ICC webcast Chess.FM coverage will be at

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 Nf6 4. d3 Bc5
5. O-O d6 6. c3 O-O 7. Nbd2 Bd7

22 minutes taken for this move but remember-
we do have relay bot breakdowns sometimes.

8. h3 a6 9. Ba4 Ba7 10. Re1 Ne7
11. Bb3 Ng6 12. Nf1 h6

18 minutes.

13. Ng3 c6 TN

Theoretical Novelty by Smates.
John Nunns sips his Diet Coke from a wine glass.

Here are the webcam links so you can watch too.

  : Webcams: http://www.bestuuronline.nl/nhchess/

14. d4!

The Ruy Lopez edge -
the nice center.

14 ... Qc7! 15. Be3!

Developing and supporting the center,
the kind of sappy annotations patzers love to be comforted with.

15 ... Rfe8

Interesting moment,
Fritz 8 prefers 15 ... c5!,
clarifying the center but
when Smeets tried this 3 moves later,
Nunn said in the postgame press webcam conference -
18 ... c5 is asking too much of the Black position.

Fritz loves space and demands
12 ... a5!!, 13 ... a5!! and 15 .... a5!!

Fritz also likes 14 ... c5!!, 15 ... c5!!, 16 ... c5

but not 18 ... c5.

Bobby Fischer -
Of course - Timing is everything.

16. Qd2

Fritz 8 -
16 Qd3, Qd2, Nd2, Rc1, Qc2

Human terms - just mobilze behind the
comfortable center and hope for the best.

16 ... exd4!

18 minutes.

17. Bxd4! Bxd4! 18. cxd4! c5?

" Asking too much from the Black position. "
Dr. John Nunn.

Fritz 8 -
18 ... Be6

19. Rac1

19 Qc2!!! and Bc2! are good too.

19 ... b6! 20. Qc3

8 minutes

20 Bc2!!, Bc4!! and Qd3!! are good too.

20 ... Qb7

20 ... Bc6 is a hair better

21. dxc5!! dxc5

21 ... bc! 22 e5!! is bad too.

22. e5!! Nd5! 23. Qd2!!

The more mobile Ruy Lopez pawn center is
rolling and Smates is getting pushed around.

23 ... Ndf4

14 minutes

24. Rc4??

9 minutes

IM Will ( Beely - Vesna Kelleher's pronunciation )
Paschall and I were calling for the obvious 24 Ne4!!
live on our webcast -
Nunn in his exuberance called 24 Rc4?? -
" the best move of the game! ",
claiming it stopped all the g2-h3 nonsense.

In reality, it encourages it.
24 Rc4 Nh3+!! 25 gh Q:f3 26 Q:d7 N:e5!!
is better for Smates.

As Nunn said in his intro to HIS
LOGICAL CHESS, MOVE BY MOVE
- It's very hard to find a Grandmaster
game that stands up to computer scrutiny.

Nunn's "best" move was actually his worst,
giving Smeets his only chance of the game.

Fritz doth make fools of us all-
Brian Wall

Computers are making people lose respect for Grandmasters-
Kramnik.

23 ... Ne6??

2 minutes -
12 left for 17 moves

25. Ne4!!

Back on track.

25 ... Qc7! 26. Nf6+!!!

OK, Fritz corrects the Grandmaster on move 24
but now the good doctor corrects the contraption.

26 Nd6!! or Rc3! are good but
Nunn's move is grrrrrrrrrrreat.

You can't really ignore the knight because he
attacks d7 and e8 but now the
Incredible Green Hulk smashes in on h6.

" It was very pleasant to make this move! ",
beamed Nunn.

26 ... gxf6! 27. Qxh6!!!!

20 seconds.

We didn't predict 26 Nf6+!!, I'll admit,
but I DID predict this one.
Fritz is starting to catch on to the horror of
27 ... Qd8 28 Rg4 or
27 ... fe 28 Rg4

27 .... f5! 28. Nh4!!!

4 minutes.
John is calculating faster than Fritz.
28 Rc3 is second best.

28 ... Bb5

8 minutes spent and
2 minutes left to move 40.
Nunn has 36.

Doctor/Grandmaster John Nunn admitted with a smile
he hadn't considered this defense but -
" All my pieces are attacking the Kingside and
Smates has trouble getting his pieces back to defend"
and waved at the a8-rook, c7-Queen and d7-bishop.

Smates waited for a better game to go over.

Later I heard Smeets go over his endgame
victory over Ulf Andersson in Dutch.

28 ... Bc6!! or ... Ne7!
are both successfully met by 29 Re3!!

29. Nxf5!!!

11 minutes.

Nunn continues to drag Fritz 8
kicking and screaming to victory.

29 ... Rad8

Nothing works.
Ask any chip.

30. Rg4!!!!!!

30 Rce4 is a distant second best.

30 ... c4! 31. Bc2

Fritz 8 -
31 Rg5!!!!!!!!, Bc2 !!!!!, R:g6+!!! and h4!! all win.
Of course the Kib-Fr-itzers online
were all screaming for 31 Rg5-h5

31 ... Rd5

20 seconds with 57 seconds remaining.

Even the best 31 ... Rd3 fails to many moves like
32 Rg5!!!!!, Ree4!!!!, h4!!!! et. al.

32. Rh4
