Tyler Hughes versus Daniel Schwarz, Board 1, Denker tournament of male High
School Champions, was Board 1 on ICC today. Tyler did not disappoint.
Some of the 50 kibitzers were IM Kim Commons, IM Mark Ginsburg, James
Drebenstedt, Duwayne Langseth, Barry Rabinovivh, Jesse Cohen and
ICC fpawn, Daniel's coach. I wished him and Danny " good luck " and he said, "
Thanx." I felt like we were Little League parents sitting in the bleachers
watching our kids run around the bases.

During the kibitzing Aries2 ( IM Mark Ginsburg ) told a funny story about
atacker extraordinaire Emory Tate approaching Ginsburg, GM Joel Benjamin and
others,
exhorting them to go to his board where he was about to - " sac in his face ".
When they got there Emory was down a piece for nothing and resigned two moves
later. So " I am ging to sac in his face!" is now legendary code for -
" I am about to self-destruct."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
The kibitzers were nervous when Tyler had less time but I assured them that this
is the area where " The Iceman Shineth ". Ginsburg teased Aigner about teaching
all his students the lousy Dutch but I said - " When Tyler is done with Danny,
he will wish he had tried the Dutch ".
Danny held his own but it was obvious he had a safe, conservative style.
Danny tried to get tactical when Tyler was low on time but the Iceman
delivereth.
I have the rare privilige of annotating this game on Josh Bloomer's computer
heaven, megadatabase, Rybka, extensive library, etc. - to give one example,
www.Chessbase.com, listed 4 games with 4 h4
against the Grunfeld, a kibitzer claimed 24 games and Bloomer's megabase had 47
examples. 4 h4 took off recently so new sources are what counts here.
Someone asked me what my idea was in teaching that to Tyler but I haven't taught
Tyler anything in 4 years so 4 h4 was a shock to me as well. I think the idea is
h5 and an exchange sac on h5.
I was brimming over with pride and joy watching Tyler excel, dropping links to
www.Walverine.com and Tyler's Chessville brilliancy over Karagianis - Ginsburg
and others said - " Enough, what about Daniel Schwarz? " and I said -
" ask fpawn!"
Tyler did not disappoint, trying hard to break through, keeping the growing
spectators ( about 50 ) enthralled. Tyler and his opponent entered moves on a
Monroi ( hand held palm pilot, sometimes making errors ) and Monroi obliged by
running a live click and move site.
Without further ado, let's see the game.
ON ICC examine liblist live.

August 9, 2006
Happy Birthday, Lorraine Clifford!
I made a fateful date with her daughter Joan 13 years ago today.
1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 g6 3. Nc3 d5 4. h4!?
A shock to everyone, including me, Daniel, Josh, everyone, really -
Tyler is treating the Grunfeld the way Fischer and Karpov manhandled the Dragon.
4 ... c6
This sort of sets the tone for the whole game -
Tyler pressing forward, Daniel hanging on.
Tyler's edge is looking for ways to destroy structures
with sacrifices - Daniel wants to win from a safe haven.
I was wondering if Tyler was going to unleash
5 h5 N:h5 6 R:h5 but he is more restrained.
5. cxd5 cxd5 6. Bg5 Ne4 7. Qb3 Nxg5 8. hxg5!
Tyler loved the Fishing Pole at age 9 -
we have a Bishing Pole theme here as
8 hg unleashes the h1-rook.
8 ... e6 9. f4
9 minutes spent on this move.
I was not very good at guessing Tyler's pawn moves today -
9 e4! de 10 N:e4 is another way to guard the g5-pawn.
9 ... Bg7 10. e3!
Ginsburg thought this was a boring lockdown of the position
but I was excitedly waiting for Tyler to play R:h7 or N:d5.
10 ... Nc6! 11. Nf3! Rb8
Interesting plan to guard the b7-pawn, allowing ... Bd7 but also
to expand and create Queenside space with ... b5.
12. Bd3 Bd7! 13. g4
12 minutes
Preparing f5 and creating a cozy King-aerie at g3.
Rybka - 13 Kf2, Rh2, Rc1, 0-0-0
Rybka just makes moves -
Tyler wants to gather a
Kingside storm and unleash
thunder and lightning.
13 ... b5!
8 minutes
14. Kf2!
14 minutes for his 14th move.
Both players are playing well with many near equal alternatives
each move.
I pondered idly about fate, the consequences of connecting with people.
What would Tyler be doing if I hadn't shown up at a coffeshop with Aiden and
Baby Devon in a car seat to give eager Tyler his first Chess lesson 6 years
ago? Would he still be on Board 1 for the Denker? Possibly, he loved Chess
fanatically even then.
14 ... h6
14 minutes for his 14th move.
Danny decides castling short would encourage h-file doublings and tripling so he
frees his h7-pawn from bondage - seems like a good longterm decision but it does
open some lines against his King voluntarily.
15. gxh6!
10 minutes.
15 ... Rxh6! 16. Rxh6!
Rybka wants to snag the b5 pawn with
16 N:b5 and 17 Nd6+ but Tyler just wants to
hold the Quenside and rip open the Kingside.
Everyone was shocked when ICC relayed
16 B:g6?? but I knew those earnest, eager
young lads sometimes put the wrong moves
in their Monrois so I wasn't too worried.
The previous day I pleaded with the admins to correct
the Yu-Tyler Denker game moves ... f5?? and Qd8+??
as ... Q:g5! and Qd8+! -
they finally agreed.
The best reply to 16 B:g6?? is ... R:g6!
16 ... Bxh6! 17. Rh1! Bg7! 18. Rh7
This move just seemed to help Schwarz but
it clears an attacking square for Tyler's
Queen on h1. There were other ideas like
18 N:b5, f5 or Ne5.
18 ... Kf8! 19. Qd1
The idea behind 18 Rh7 -
bring everything to bear
on Danny's King.
19 ... Be8
6 minutes.
Battening down the hatches for the coming
storm. I wondered if anyone had tipped off
Daniel to what kind of monster he was facing.
20. g5
14 minutes.
I had just kibitzed -
" Tyler is more an f5-guy than a g5-guy. "
Rybka is more a 20 Ng5 guy.
20 ... f5
8 minutes.
I kibitzed -
" 30 moves of careful play followed
by 10 moves of desperate slop. "
21. gxf6!
11 minutes.
21 ... Qxf6! 22. Ng5
Daniel made space for his pieces to defend.
Apparently he is also willing to sac a pawn to get
the two bishops and eliminate an attacking piece after
22 B:b5! a6 23 B:c6 B:c6
Cerebus will not be bought off by your lousy sop, Daniel!
This three-headed dog wants to " sac in your face! "
I was telling everyone about Autumn Hughes winning the Colorado
spelling Bee and making comments like -
Tyler Hughes, homeschooled by ICC or
Tyler Hughes, homeschooled by Fritz.
22 ... Kg8
8 minutes.
23. Qh1
6 minutes.
Rybka wants the b5-sop.
I was frightened for Daniel now because of moves like
R:g7 or N:d5 - a Tyler Queen on h1 is as powerful as
a Jeff Fox/Josh Smith/Reti Queen on a1.
23 ... a6
12 minutes.
consistent with safety-first Daniel's play all game.
Drewmister, alias Jesse (C)ohen, was demanding
23 ... N:d4! which was very complex, weird and
roughly even after
24 ed, Ke1, Rh2, Rh3, R:g7+, Kg3, Be4, a3 or N:d5.
It seemed obvious to me by Tyler's aggression with
h4 and Kf2 that he was the pyscho attacker and
by Daniel's 19 ... Be8 that he was the cautious defender
so pyschologically, 19 ... Nd4! repesented a departure for Schwarz.
I should know - Nikitovich and Jeff Maguire teased me for decades
about how " Brian can't attack!. "
24. Ne2
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
3 minutes -
How Tyler understands the essence of Chesspositions and
finds good moves quickly is a mystery to me too.
Tyler - 16 minutes left
Daniel - 38 minutes left.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
24 ... Rd8 25. Kg2!!
7 minutes.
25 ... e5?
2 minutes.
This would be best after
25 Kg3, Qd1, Qf1, Qh4, a3, Qh2, b3, Rh4, Nc1
or others.
So ... e5 is definitely a theme but Tyler's
25 Kg2!! was the best way of meeting that threat.
Antici-pay-ay-ay-ay-tion.
Daniel may have been influenced by his having 4 times Tyler's time,
36 minutes to 9.
26. dxe5!!
25 seconds -
The Iceman Delivereth!
26 ... Nxe5! 27. Rxg7+!!
26 seconds -
The Iceman Delivereth.
27 ... Qxg7!
----------------------------------------------------------------------
27 ... K:g7 28 Qh7+ Kf8
29 Qc7!!!, Qh4!!, Qh6+!! or Nd4!
27 ... K:g7 28 Qh7+ Kf8 29 Qc7!!!
threatens 30 Nh7+ or Q:e5.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
28. fxe5!
25 seconds -
The Iceman Delivereth.
28 ... Qxe5! 29. Qh7+!!
43 seconds -
The Iceman Delivereth.
29 ... Kf8! 30. Qh6+!!
25 seconds -
The Iceman Delivereth.
30 ...Ke7! 31. Nf3
Rybka -
31 Nd4, b4, Nf3, Kf3, Qh4, b3
The Iceman allows one drip of water
to fall from his carrot nose.
31 ... Qxb2 32. Nd4!!
25 seconds -
The Iceman Delivereth.
The kibitzers, led by (C)ohen,
were screaming for 32 Nfd4!!
since 32 Ned4, cutting ff the Queen,
was illegal.
I am not inventing these times -
this is what ICC is telling me.
32 ... Rd6 33. Qg7+!!
36 seconds -
The Iceman Delivereth!
Josh Bloomer saw instantly that Daniel Schwarz was
going to lose his Queen after
34 Nf5+, Ne6+ or Nc6+ next move.
Daniel got to keep the extra 20 minutes on his clock as a door prize.
{White wins} 1-0
Go Tyler! -
just two more rounds!
Go Kaila, wherever you are!
